Daring Bakers: Povitica

October 26, 2011 – Telephone conversation between Nicole and Krista

K: Hey, I was wondering if you got a chance to do the daring bakers challenge?
N: Ah, nope, I was hoping you had done it.
K: Nope.
N: Well… maybe I can do it tomorrow, I have the day off. Do you think you will have time to do it?
K: Hmmmm I don’t think so. I’ll let you know if I get a chance and you let me know if you get it done before hand.
N: Sounds good!

October 27th, 2011 (Posting Day) – Telephone conversation between Nicole and Krista

N: Did you do the challenge?
K: No you?
N: Nope. Can we skip this one? I don’t know if I will get time to do it today.
K: We already missed 2. We need to do this one.
N: Will you have time?
K: Doubtful – I have to paint a room for Grandpa
N: Ok – I haven’t even looked at the recipe yet, do you think I have everything here I’d need?
K: Yeah you should
N: Ok, I’ll find some time. I’ll let you know if I get it done!

The Daring Baker’s October 2011 challenge was Povitica, hosted by Jenni of The Gingered Whisk. Povitica is a traditional Eastern European Dessert Bread that is as lovely to look at as it is to eat!

Brown Butter, Baked Alaska, and Petit Fours

As it turns out my ice cream extravaganza last month paid off with the announcement of our next DB Challenge. The August 2010 Daring Bakers’ challenge was hosted by Elissa of 17 and Baking. For the first time, The Daring Bakers partnered with Sugar High Fridays for a co-event and Elissa was the gracious hostess of both. Using the theme of beurre noisette, or browned butter, Elissa chose to challenge Daring Bakers to make a pound cake to be used in either a Baked Alaska or in Ice Cream Petit Fours. The sources for Elissa’s challenge were Gourmet magazine and David Lebovitz’s “The Perfect Scoop”.

Since we couldn’t just make one of the deserts (how could we ever choose?), we decided it would be best if split up the recipes; Krista made the Baked Alaska and Nicole the Petit Fours.

Ice Cream Extravaganza

So after completing the last Daring Bakers Challenge and making homemade peanut butter and banana ice cream I was excited to try out some other flavours. So this past week I made 7 ice cream flavours (Clockwise: Milk Chocolate, Fresh Peach, Mint Chocolate Chip, Cinnamon, Strawberry, and Apple Taffy) and I must say overall they were really good. Homemade ice cream is probably one of my new favourite things.

Chocolate Pavlovas with Chocolate Mascarpone Mousse

The June 2010 Daring Bakers’ challenge was hosted by Dawn of Doable and Delicious. Dawn challenged the Daring Bakers’ to make Chocolate Pavlovas and Chocolate Mascarpone Mousse. The challenge recipe is based on a recipe from the book Chocolate Epiphany by Francois Payard.

This is our first Daring Baker’s Challenge since starting our new blog and  it was definitely a fun challenge to start things off! When I first read this recipe I was a little intimidated by all the steps and some new ingredients I had never heard of (Mascarpone…its a kind of cheese) but I was excited that our first task would be something neither Nicole or I had ever eaten- let alone baked.
